El Cruce was born in 2002 with the objective of uniting Argentina with Chile crossing the Andes Mountains during 3 days. It was the first adventure competition that gathered more than 300 participants with the objective of reaching another country, crossing mountains and sharing the largest camps they have ever hosted. An adventure full of experience and competition, where the teamwork of two adventurers was measured. The 2024 edition of El Cruce Saucony<\/em> brought 4,500 runners from 45 countries to explore some of Patagonia's most majestic landscapes, offering an unforgettable experience of effort, achievement, and connection with nature.<\/p><\/p>

The adventure began in San Mart\u00edn de los Andes with accreditation, followed by the transfer to the base of Lan\u00edn Volcano. The Stage 1<\/em> amazed participants with a challenging ascent to Lan\u00edn and concluded at Camp 1, on the shores of Lake Huechulafquen, where runners could rest under a starry sky.<\/p><\/p>

The Stage 2<\/em> offered a different perspective, traversing the Hulellentue Valley with stunning views of the volcano. The vastness of Patagonia accompanied every step until reaching the magical Camp 2, surrounded by hills and poplar trees.<\/p><\/p>

Finally, Stage 3<\/em> crowned the journey with the summit of Cerro Colorado, from where runners began their final descent toward the Costanera of Lake L\u00e1car. The finish line in San Mart\u00edn de los Andes marked an exciting end, filled with pride and celebration after months of effort and preparation.<\/p><\/p>

This edition also featured the inaugural La Etapa<\/em>, a 30 km race designed to allow more runners to experience the magic of El Cruce<\/em>. It was a unique opportunity to live a portion of this epic adventure and enjoy the stunning Patagonian landscapes.<\/p><\/p>

More than just a race, El Cruce 2024<\/em> was a journey of personal discovery. From the nerves at Tromen to the toughness of Lan\u00edn and the unforgettable views, every moment was etched in the hearts of those who embraced the challenge. Now it\u2019s time to cherish this unique experience and celebrate the connection with the mountains and those who shared the journey.<\/p><\/p>

La 21\u00aa edici\u00f3n de\u00a0El Cruce Saucony<\/em>\u00a0reuni\u00f3 a 4500 corredores de m\u00e1s de 47 pa\u00edses en los imponentes filos de la Patagonia. Durante tres etapas inolvidables, los participantes vivieron la intensidad y la magia de la carrera por etapas m\u00e1s grande del mundo, con el Cerro Catedral como base principal y punto de partida.<\/p>

En la\u00a0Stage 1<\/em>, el ascenso al Refugio Frey y el Camp 1 ofreci\u00f3 paisajes \u00e9picos, mientras que la\u00a0Stage 2<\/em>\u00a0desafi\u00f3 a los corredores con r\u00e1fagas de 70 km\/h y 3190 metros de desnivel acumulado en Cerro Cap\u00f3n y Punta Suyai. Finalmente, la\u00a0Stage 3<\/em>\u00a0llev\u00f3 a los participantes al Cerro San Mart\u00edn, con vistas \u00fanicas y la emoci\u00f3n de cruzar el arco final.<\/p>

Con paisajes deslumbrantes y desaf\u00edos \u00fanicos,\u00a0El Cruce 2023<\/em>\u00a0escribi\u00f3 otro cap\u00edtulo hist\u00f3rico en su legado.<\/p>

For the first time El Cruce repeats location from one year to another, returning to Villa La Angostura for those who had scheduled their trip in 2020 and had to modify it due to the pandemic. Repeating camps (Lago Espejo and Bah\u00eda Inalco) and with routes with some similarities to 2021, this edition stood out for the excellent service provided to the runners. The runners only had to think about running and enjoying El Cruce.<\/p>

After fifteen years, and after an edition suspended by Covid, Villa La Angostura was chosen as host city for the 19th edition of El Cruce. With a town full of runners, the streets of Villa La Angostura dressed up as El Cruce, with a start and finish line in the main avenue.<\/p>

During the 1st day they traveled a distance of 28 km to Cerro Bayo, and then went through the Correntoso River and ended at Camp 1 in the Camping Lago Espejo. The 2nd stage of a distance of 23km, starting from the same Camp 1 and arriving at Camp 2 Inalco, a place without doubt shocking.<\/p>

For the 3rd and last stage the distance was 28 km, and the highlight was the Cerro O'Connor that gave us incredible views.<\/p>

Lanin Volcano, undoubtedly one of the most spectacular landscapes that Patagonia has to offer. Two campsites with lake shore at 1:30hs from the nearest city and 2:30hs from the host city made this edition a great logistical challenge.<\/p>

More than 4 thousand runners took part this year, with the first stage crossing the Lanin Volcano from the Tromen Pass to Huechulafquen Lake where Camp 1 was located in a 30km route. The 2nd stage of 27 km, was a more runnable stage where the rocky beaches of the Paimun and Huechulafquen Lakes provided its complexity.<\/p>

Finally, the riders were taken to El Desaf\u00edo in San Mart\u00edn de los Andes to complete the 3rd stage of 31.5 km, with a dream start, an ascent to Laguna La Kika, and a subsequent descent to reach SMA.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/section>

After 16 editions in February, El Cruce moved to December and the city chosen was Puc\u00f3n - Chile. With more than 5 thousand runners, and a new record number of countries represented, this edition had the Villarrica Volcano and Quetrupillan as its stage.<\/p>

The first stage was 32 km with a circular route with a great ascent to the Quetrupillan Volcano, which was reached by bus and then transferred to Camp 1 in Palguin Bajo.<\/p>

The second stage of 31.5 km bordering the Villarrica Volcano ended at Camp 2.<\/p>

On the last day the riders reached the beaches of Lake Villarrica after a 33.5 km stage.<\/p>

Exceeding all expectations, El Cruce in its sixteenth edition surprised with unique routes, camps and unforgettable landscapes.<\/p>

With an organization center at Cerro Catedral, the runners were taken on their first day of the race to the El Manso border crossing, where they completed the immigration procedures and a 3.5km circuit passing through the Casa de Etelvina, which has the particularity of having the landmark in its garden. The runners moved to the second start to run 32km and reach the La Querencia campsite.<\/p>

The second stage had its start from Camp 1, and after 33km the runners arrived at the second campsite: Los Baqueanos.<\/p>

The last day of the race had a distance of 28km, finishing in the plaza Catalina Reynal at the base of Cerro Catedral.<\/p>

The 15th El Cruce could not have been experienced any other way, with more than 3,000 runners crossing into Chile through the Hua-Hum pass on the first day of the race. In this edition the host city was San Martin de los Andes, Argentina.<\/p>

La primera etapa, tuvo su largada en Quila Quina y luego de 43km su llegada a orillas del r\u00edo Hua Hum.<\/p>

The next stage was 32km and finished in Quilanlahue.<\/p>

The third stage had a 33km course, with an exciting and unforgettable finish in San Martin de los Andes.<\/p>

An unforgettable edition, with more than 2,500 runners from 36 nationalities once again uniting Argentine and Chilean Patagonia. The organization center chosen in this fourteenth edition was El Cerro Catedral, located in Bariloche, Argentina. There, a great adventure began.<\/p>

The first stage had an elevation gain of 1174 meters over a total of 25km, finishing in the campsite Los Baqueanos, on the edge of Lake Guti\u00e9rrez.<\/p>

The second day of the race was 42km, with an elevation gain of 1269m. The finish of this stage was in Pampa Linda, where the runners could enjoy Cerro Tronador.<\/p>

In the final stage, with a total of 28km and an elevation gain of 2307m, the runners completed the crossing to Chile through the P\u00e9rez Rosales Pass and re-entered through said pass. In the middle of the route they crossed the Fr\u00edas lagoon by boat, and then made the last 3km to Puerto Blest.<\/p>

Surely the toughest edition of El Cruce in its entire history. The previous week, endless rains hit the trans-Andean region, which prepared the ground for a race full of tough alternatives. Strong storm, hurricane winds and hail surprised the runners in the first stage at the Osorno Volcano. The terrible weather conditions forced the change of the routes of stages 2 and 3. A finish at the foot of the Puyehue Volcano, in El Caulle, put an end to a very hard Cruce 2014 for all the participants and also for the Organization.<\/p>

In this edition, the individual category was incorporated for the first time. Puc\u00f3n, the beautiful mountain city at the foot of the majestic Villarica Volcano, was the organization center of the race. There were 3 difficult stages, in which the weather was good, with beautiful sunny days and very pleasant temperatures. The competitors enjoyed characteristic mountain trails of the X Region of Chile. Only at the end of the last day's course did the weather show its claws, but the competitors had already completed most of the course, which had an incredible finish at the foot of the Lan\u00edn Volcano.<\/p>

El Cruce 2012 was a unique edition with extraordinary logistics. One thousand five hundred participants and 23 countries represented, coming from 5 continents, fulfilled the objective of symbolically uniting Argentina with Chile, through the Andes Mountains.<\/p>

Once again we spent the previous night in a camp on Lake Pirihueico, Chile.<\/p>

The runners arrived after clearing customs and traveling 2 hours on a barge with truly incredible views, including the Mocho Choshuenco Volcano.<\/p>

The start, from Puerto Fuy, was on Friday the 3rd, starting at 8:30 a.m. In this stage, the distance that the competitors covered was 34.7 kilometers, this day being the one with the greatest elevation since it included the Mocho volcano, reaching 2,133 meters above sea level at its volcanic cone. 10km on snow with views of several volcanoes. That day they were also able to see how the El Caulle volcano released the ashes that hit Argentine Patagonia so much.<\/p>

The second day they left from the camp located on the banks of the Fuy River. This was a hard, long stage with quite a lot of elevation gain, with a total distance to cover of 40.3 kilometers, and a finish at the edge of Lake Pirehueico, a water mirror of glacial origin.<\/p>

During the thrid and final day, the route advanced through the Hua Hum pass towards Lake Nontue, in Argentina.<\/p>

Throughout the three stages, Gustavo Reyes and Nelson Ortega from Neuqu\u00e9n led the competition, completing the entire 2012 circuit in a final time of 9 hours, 25 minutes and 22 seconds, and confirming themselves as three-time champions of El Cruce.<\/p>

This edition celebrated the 10th consecutive year of the race, changing venue each year.<\/p>

For the first time, the night before the start was held at a campsite near Lake Rucachoroi. It was a great experience.<\/p>

The finish was in the first campsite on the shores of the \u00d1orquinco Lake, where runners could enjoy the beach and the unique location.<\/p>

This was one of the most difficult editions, due to the poor weather.<\/p>

More than 1,500 runners from 20 countries faced intense rain and wind, surrounded by a spectacular and rugged Patagonian landscape, unique in the world. For three days, the competitors, in teams of two members, traveled a circuit of almost 100 km, linking Argentina with Chile through the El Manso pass.<\/p>

Cargada de euforia, adrenalina y pasi\u00f3n, la primera etapa larg\u00f3 desde una altura de 790 mts. de Bariloche con un recorrido de 29 kms. que incluy\u00f3 importantes desniveles por caminos de monta\u00f1as y agrestes senderos, el cruce de un puente colgante y del lago, en lancha y gom\u00f3n, m\u00e1s la espectacular vista de una maravillosa cascada de 50 mts. de altura.<\/p>

Already in the first stage, problems began to arise when crossing the suspension bridges due to safety concerns. Later the strong winds on the lake made it impossible for the runners to use some of the rubber boats to cross the lake. The camp was set up on a soccer field meters from the lake. The second day started from Lago Escondido, with a difficult course of 20 km under heavy rain and strong winds, with muddy trails that made it impossible to walk normally.<\/p>

Y despu\u00e9s de llover mas de 90 mm en 24hs. se rompi\u00f3 un puente y eso dej\u00f3 la mitad de los camiones de un lado y la otra mitad del otro. Por lo que la organizaci\u00f3n tuvo que montar un campamento en pocas horas. Segu\u00edan las lluvias y todo era agua. Las carpas con agua, la ropa mojada, hizo que muchos corredores abandonaran con hipotermia y malestares.<\/p>

The 3rd stage was along the Manso River until reaching Paso el Manso on the border on the Chilean side.<\/p>

In the 8th edition the number of participants exceeded 1000 runners. Always in teams of 2 members, with a length of three days and a course of almost 100km.<\/p>

The headquarters, San Martin de los Andes. Packet pickup in school N5. Runners started from the beach of Lake Lolog and traveled through the valley to Laguna Verde with imposing views of the Lanin Volcano.<\/p>

The 1st campsite with sandy volcanic beaches and an incredible sun was an ideal setting.<\/p>

In the second stage they passed the volcanic lava that is beneath the Laguna Verde and crossed the lake in canoes. They continued in the direction of Lanin, crossing with water up to their chests through the union of the Paimun and Huechulafquen lakes to reach to the camp by the lake.<\/p>

A break at the camp with incredible beaches before the last stage passing the Lanin Volcano, through the Tromen customs and arriving at a campsite in Chile with entertainment by Chilean bands.<\/p>

It was an edition with ideal weather!<\/p>

After 6 editions, the next race was headquartered in Bariloche, more precisely at the base of Cerro Catedral. The entire cathedral town filled with runners, from various Argentine provinces and several countries around the world. The Catalina Reynal square filled with containers where each runner packed their things to use during the 3 days of the race.<\/p>

The race started on the beach of Lake Mascardi, passed through the Illon lagoon and arrived at camp 1 located behind the lake. World-class elite runners were already beginning to arrive and the fight began between the locals Tosti-Ayala and the Spanish-Kenyan duo of Aurelio and\u2026.<\/p>

The 2nd stage took place along the Manso River to the Ventisquero Negro glacier and setting up camp in the well-known Pampa Linda on the coast of the Manso River and its cold rushing waters.<\/p>

The last stretch was passing through the Rocca refuge, Paso de las Nubes, the Frias river and lake, the Perez Rosales International Pass and we ferried them to the other coast of the Frias lake and they ran the last kilometers until arriving at Puerto Blest.<\/p>

Upon arrival they had the opportunity to return by boat enjoying Lake Nahuel Huapi to the dock in front of the Llao Llao Hotel.<\/p>

Once again the winning duo was Sebasti\u00e1n Tosti and Samuel Ayala.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/section>

By 2007, we had already visited 5 venues, each with different routes and campsites.<\/p>

We chose Esquel as the new venue. El Cruce also marked the initial starting point for the development of races in the area.<\/p>

A new province, a different region for both Argentina and Chile, and a new border crossing.<\/p>

They started from Trevel\u00edn, a town that came to see the start with great enthusiasm. The route reached Lake Rosario where the first camp was set up.<\/p>

On the second day, they went through the steppe to the banks of the Futaleuf\u00fa River, where camp 2 was set up.<\/p>

There was a great camaraderie in both camps. Runners from all over gathered to share meals, snacks, and breakfasts. They began to discuss the different snacks they used during the race.<\/p>

The route on day 3 connected the provinces of Chubut (Argentina) and the X Region (Chile) passing through the Futaleufu international pass, with the finish line in the city of the same name.<\/p>

A new border crossing, another province and region, a unique route with incredible campsites. On this occasion, they crossed an eternal snow glacier, the Baguilt Glacier.<\/p>

In 2006, the venue was Villa La Angostura. In this edition, runners from over 16 countries began to arrive, and it became common for them to come in groups from these countries. It was a great satisfaction but also a great commitment from the organization to match the standards of the great races in the world.<\/p>

Both this edition of El Cruce and the Adventure Race of 2001 were iconic races in the Villa that were later copied in subsequent races.<\/p>

They started from Cerro Bayo, along its ridges, to Lake Espejo where an incredible campsite was set up with an amazing beach.<\/p>

On the second day, they went to the end of Lake Nahuel Huapi, bordering the Argentine customs. On the third day, they reached Chile through wonderful trails, crossing through the Cardenal Samor\u00e9 pass.<\/p>

We had a great closing event at the gymnasium in the Villa where they continued to share anecdotes from the race.<\/p>

In 2005, the event was held for the first time in San Mart\u00edn de los Andes, with around 600 competitors participating in this edition. The chosen border crossing was Hua-Hum.<\/p>

It was the most popular race to date in this locality. Runners from several countries started coming to experience El Cruce between Argentina and Chile.<\/p>

The route featured the backdrop of 4 lakes with their magnificent beaches. The campsites in Quilanlahue and Lake Lacar continued with tent setup and distribution in containers.<\/p>

They started from Playa Bonita in Villa Lolog, followed the path along the lake, passed by Melon Beach, and ascended to Camp 1. On Day 2, they descended to Lake Lacar, continued along the coast, and reached Camp 2. On the third day, they crossed the narrows separating Lakes Lacar and Nontue, by boats and canoes, and began the journey to Lake Pirihueico in Chile, where the finish line was located.<\/p>

The winners were Juli\u00e1n Peralta and Ramiro Paris.<\/p>

In February 2004, the organization moved to Puc\u00f3n, Chile. The number of runners doubled again, and we were already more than 500.<\/p>

For many runners, it was their first time in the city of Puc\u00f3n, and we were impressed by its volcanic sand beaches, Lake Villarrica, its landscapes, how beautiful the city is, how well its residents maintain it, and above all, the imposing sight of seeing the Villarrica Volcano all the time.<\/p>

The start was from the center of Puc\u00f3n, after listening to the national anthems of Chile and Argentina. We skirted the Villarrica Volcano on the first day.<\/p>

In this first route, there was a very poor measurement by the organization (last-minute changes and measurements on maps that didn't have correct information and lacking measurement devices), resulting in the route being much longer than expected. For this reason, we had to change the route for Day 2 and also Camp 2. On the third day, we passed through trails at the foot of the Lan\u00edn Volcano on the Chilean side and finally arrived at Lake Tromen after crossing the Tromen international customs checkpoint.<\/p>

Everyone ended up (runners and organization) very tired due to the measurement issue. It was a learning experience for the entire staff; we had to rethink and improve the work of each area to grow organizationally.<\/p>

The first to cross the finish line were Pablo Ureta and Cameron Widoff from Team Casa Irwo, from C\u00f3rdoba and the United States, respectively. On this occasion, Nadia Vottero and Ariel Garrig\u00f3 chose to get married by Father Mateo on the shores of Lake Tromen, after finishing third in the mixed category.<\/p>

In 2003, El Cruce moved to the Province of Neuqu\u00e9n, starting from Villa Pehuenia, passing through Lake \u00d1orquinco, and arriving at Lake Icalma (Chile) through the Icalma Pass. This edition had a previous camp where all the runners and organization shared the night before on the shore of the lake; the participation of runners doubled. It was an edition where sharing among runners was the most important aspect of the event. On the first day, we departed from the narrowness of Lakes \u00d1orquinco and Alumine with sun and scorching heat, and within a few hours, a strong wind with snowfall arose in the afternoon and evening. We had to evacuate many runners due to hypothermia. During dinner, while it was snowing, we witnessed the wedding of the Tucuman couple Maria Medina and Bernardo Breslaver, with all the runners present while the priest from Pehuenia united them in marriage.<\/p>

On the second day, the course had more than 60cm of snow, and all the marks were buried under the snow; we had to change the route. It was an incredible experience with the containers and the tent setup being handled by each runner. We arrived at Icalma greeted by the carabineros and the local residents.<\/p>

Something that was very noticeable in these early editions, the majority of the runners had extensive mountain experience, and those who dared to venture into the races did so with great humility, asking questions and wanting to learn how to enjoy the experiences.<\/p>

There were no complaints about the camp, the food, the cold, etc. etc. People learned to ENJOY.<\/p>

The winners of the general category were Sergio Trecaman and Luis Austin from Esquel.<\/p>

Quilmes was the sponsor, so beer was never missing at the campsites and finish line.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/section>

In 2002, El Cruce began! Amidst the economic crisis in Argentina, 124 adventurers gathered in Penitentes, Mendoza, with the idea of crossing from Penitentes to Aconcagua to Cristo Redentor to Portillo (Chile) through the Cristo Redentor Pass. They all experienced a great adventure, without complaining about the lack of cold drinks, meals, or something hot. They shared among themselves what each one had brought (bread, salami, tuna, rice, cold cuts, nuts). In the evening, the army made a stew, and for many, it was the best meal they had eaten in years.<\/p>

The camp at the base of Aconcagua will be remembered forever, the containers, setting up the tents, sharing the adventurous spirit of each participant, where the most cherished thing was the satisfaction of being there! And that changed as El Cruce grew.<\/p>

It was common for them to wake up at 2 am and gather to share conversations around a fire because they couldn't sleep.<\/p>

The presence of runners from almost all Argentine provinces prevailed. It was an interesting aspect because it sparked curiosity about life in each province among the different runners.<\/p>

We were able to experience the trails of Aconcagua with its mules carrying heavy loads downhill. The main advice was to move aside when you see the mules coming because they won't move. The 'March of San Lorenzo' played by the army band and the words of the lieutenant colonel bidding farewell to the runners at camp 2 brought tears to many of us.<\/p>

It will be remembered for the emotion that many runners felt when crossing into Chile at the moment they saw the Christ the Redeemer statue. The winners of the first edition, in the general category, were the duo from Villa La Angostura composed of Fabio Torchia and Rub\u00e9n Ocampo. The closing party at Hotel Portillo was a major event, sharing dances with traditional Chilean music bands.<\/p>
